Can a neighborhood see transformation and new development in a manner that doesn't push out the people who already live there or make their rents skyrocket? The answer is a resounding “yes,” but it's not easy. Durham-based real estate developer Tiffany Elder has spent years grappling with this challenge and teaching others about it as a faculty member at the Incremental Development Alliance. In this session, she will delve into the complexities of housing development, discuss how to create investment strategies that benefit both developers and communities, and explore ways to prevent displacement of existing residents—sharing plenty of her own examples of both successes and failures along the way. Elder will be joined by Daniel Herriges, former Strong Towns Editor in Chief and co-author of a new bookEscaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Approach to the Housing Crisis.

The recording for this session is available for purchase immediately (it was presented live on September 26, 2024).

The course is worth 1 continuing education credit through the AICP.
