This session, available exclusively to round-trip ticket holders for Local-Motive 2024, was recorded live at our 2024 National Gathering. We hope you enjoy it!
Zoning and building codes are at the very heart of what shapes our cities. Too often, they’re used to freeze our neighborhoods in time, never allowing them to adapt to new residents and new needs. Luckily, a fresh class of code pioneers is setting out to change that.
In this session, you’ll hear from Alli Thurmond Quinlan (architect and founder of Flintlock Lab) about a revolutionary model developer code that can be adopted and adapted incrementally. You’ll hear from Russell Preston (founder of Principle Group) about citywide code successes in New England’s small towns and big cities, as well as a new, open-source “PlaceCode.” And you’ll learn from Jennifer Griffin (architect, urban designer and founder of J Griffin Design) about how pre-approved building programs and codes are transforming development in South Bend, Indiana. Andrew Burleson (Strong Towns Board Member) facilitates discussion and Q&A.
